A Weed By Any Other Name

New Jersey approves civil unions.

Identical to marriage, except in name. Prompting....

"Gay rights groups have argued that not calling such unions "marriage" creates a different, and inferior, institution."

Shining a blinding light on the fact that it has never been about equal rights, health insurance, death benefits or adopting rights, but about rubbing Christian's noses in an act they believe is sin.

Even if they do get nomenclature of "marriage", they still won't be happy. And they'll blame their lack of happiness on the fact that somewhere, someone disapproves of their choices.

Senate 101

From DailyKos' comment page regarding Tim Johnson's stroke...

"Our collective prayers will work miracle - "The Senator will be fine. Nothing is going to take away our victory. Period. In our own ways, let us all pray for him and his family. God Bless the US Senate.""

Well, if Tim Johnson is unable to serve and Governor Mike Rounds appoints a Republican, which South Dakota voters gave him the right to do, that would take away the Democrat victory in the Senate. Prayer is good but if only to a God that can do something.

"Can someone explain why a 50/50 split would automatically put the Senate back in the hands of the Republicans? I understand the thing about Dick Cheney breaking any tie votes, but what decides who controls the senate in light of a split"

Um, Dick Cheney.

"uh...Isn't it currently 51 (democrats and allies) and 49 (republicans) and doesn't that meant that the loss of any one senator leaves it at 50 vs 49, and therefore in this case Cheney has no role and the democrats retain control? There would have to be 2 democratic losses to reach 49 49 and enable Cheney to break the tie. Correct me if I'm wrong on this"

I mean really. These people are allowed to vote?

"I'm a South Dakota Democrat here... actually Tim Johnson is from my home town of Vermillion (where I went to K-12 and am going to college in). Mike Rounds is the governor here.  He has a "nice guy" reputation... in fact, that's how he won the GOP primary to become governor.  There was a viscious primary between the two "front runners" and Rounds came out untarnished and won the primary.  I don't think he's run won negative ad. Anyway, Sen. Johnson is a popular senator-- one of the most popular in the country.  If Rounds appoints a Republican, it may tarnish his image as a "nice guy."  In South Dakota, niceness matters (this isn't New Jersey). So, just a glimmer of hope.  I wouldn't neccessarily "count on" Rounds appointing a Republican.  But, who knows, I mean, it'd be hard for Rounds to turn down a GOP for appointment. Cross your fingers."

"Cross your fingers"? "In our own ways, let us all pray"? These people are suddenly downright evangelical.

But the winner is (drumroll please)...

"But you still must ask why do only Dem Senators get hit with "accidents" or health problems.

Wellstone
Carnahan
Daschle and Leahy anthrax attacks
Now Dem Johnson.

Coincidence? I will also point out for all the conspiracy-minded among you that there are rf radiation weapons (2d generation being tested now) that disrupt blood vessels and breakdown body tissue. They can be in cellphones and cameras. Arafat and even Sharon may have been a couple of recent victims."

He forgot JFK and RFK.

Though the Governor is obligated to set a special election date within 90 days, he still may appoint a successor in the meantime...

"12-11-4.   Temporary appointment by Governor to fill vacancy in United States Senate. Pursuant to the Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America, the Governor may fill by temporary appointment, until a special election is held pursuant to this chapter, vacancies in the office of senator in the Senate of the United State"

Of Wizards and Hobbits

Watched the first disc of "The Fellowship of the Ring" tonight. It wears well. Man did it have it all over "A Beautiful Mind". Should've won the Oscar. The Ring Trilogy wasn't about Nazism. It wasn't about environmentalism. Think bigger. Tolkien thought the Industrial Revolution was the end of life as we'd known it. And he was spot on. My family and I live a very Pre-Industrial Age existence. We home school. I work at home (largely). My oldest son is studying the family business (music). We attend church weekly. Heck, I don't even drive my car except for work. I walk everywhere else. Our life is very simple and peaceful. Most of the time everyone is reading. This is why I'm the Contrarian Guitarist.

Tied Game?

Sen. Tim Johnson suffered a stroke today. Seems like he is doing well. But should he not be able to return to duties in Washington, Governor Mike Rounds, a Republican, can appoint a Republican or Democrat. And he should appoint a Republican. That's one of the powers of all elected governors. This one just happens to be Republican. It's not playing hardball. Hardball is what the Democrats will do to try and pressure Mike Rounds to not "affect national/federal politics.

Green and Red

Think environmentalists aren't closet communists? Check out whose president and founder of Global Green USA. Yes, Mikhail Gorbachev. He wants to save America from the threat of global warming? More like he wants to save the US from the threat of global profits.

CAIR About Money

CAIR is trying to follow the Rainbow Coalitions methodolgy of extortion. I don't think it will work. US Airways should not pay them one cent. If I were on that flight I might be tempted to sue the Imams.

Why Was Bill Bugging Diana?

Why was Bill Clinton bugging Diana? Are rumors of their tryst true? Clinton (through the NSA) is denying.

Rockets from South Carolina

Heard Bridgette Gabriel on Michael Medved today.

Here's her book, "Because They Hate"

One of her contentions is that the Islamists want Europe to take Israel back. Deny the Holocaust. Force the Europeans to prove that it happened. Demand they make restitution. A New Israel.

God promised Abraham he would father a nation. Because of his lack of faith he fathered two. It's Isaac and Ishmael. Isaac the father of the Jews and Ishmael the father of the Arabs. (Genesis 16-17, 21-22)

If you carved out a piece of Germany and Austria to create Israel. There still would not be peace. Heck, if tomorrow you made Florida "Israel", Islamists would fire rockets from South Carolina declaring that this was Palestinian land.

The Goose Egg

On Yahoo: Robert Gates went before the Senate Armed Services Committee today and was confirmed 24-0.

The goose egg is probably attributable to the rabid fury by the sitting Democrats on the committee to rid us of Rumsfeld (who in my estimation is the best thing to happen to the press conference since the microphone).

A couple of quotes of note....

""In my view, all options are on the table, in terms of how we address this problem in Iraq," he told the committee. But he also acknowledged the complexity of the challenge."

That was for the Democrats and...

""There are no new ideas on Iraq," he said during a discussion of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group, which previewed its findings and recommendations to President Bush Tuesday and will release them Wednesday. Gates was a member of the group until Bush announced his nomination for the Pentagon job last month."

That was for the Republicans.

The diatribe from the left has been the lack of openness to new ideas by the Bush Administration. According to Gates, "There are no new ideas on Iraq", implying in this round of questions re: the Iraq Study Group, that even... dramatic pause here, the administration considered talks with Iran and Syria.

The committee (including Senators Levin, Kennedy, Clinton and Bayh) seemed to endorse that conclusion by endorsing Gates.

So maybe the zero in 24-0 is really the letter "O". And the maybe the "O" stands for the Openness of the Bush Administration. And maybe it was a secret signal to the President that they know that he has been open all along. And maybe... oh, nevermind.

Crucified Santa

From Drudge...

Crucified Santa gains few fans for B.C. artist

From the article...

"All I wanted to do was to promote a dialogue," Wright said. "Global warming is consumption-driven so there’s the argument. We have to come to terms with our hang-up on consumption. We’re in a consumptive orgy, I feel."

Do you suppose those who rail against consumerism consider themselves less of a consumer because they download music illegally? Just speculating.
