The Palin Effect

The addition to Sarah Palin to the Republican ticket may be a good and clarifying thing for Obama Pollsters. It may soften the affect of the "Bradley Effect" on Obama's pre-November 4th numbers. Those who had planned to vote McCain but would've said undecided or "voting for Obama" to pollsters to not appear racist, can now say McCain because a woman is on the ticket and the fear of a sexist charge may offset the fear of a racist charge. That may be a little of what we are seeing now in the polling. Factoring in the "Bradley Effect", assuming it even showed up, the Obama camp would've had to been around 4 or 5 points up on election day.

Though if you look at the California primary my numbers could be way off. Obama was ahead by as much as 13 and lost by 10. To a woman! That could be called the "Obama Effect".

Let the Media Do That

Dee Dee Myers in final analysis of Gibson's interview with Palin responding to Stephanopoulos' question "what should Obama do?" She said "he needs to not go after her, let the media do that." I kid you not. Yet again they admit it.

McCain, Palin, McCain, Palin

The ivory tower left often thinks too much of themselves. In the Sixties they became reactionaries. And now it's just in their blood, in their DNA. That's not a good combination at times. Like election years. They believe they can connect McCain to Bush, call him McSame (a rare bit of cleverness on their part), then POW!, it's Palin. Now they fixate on Palin. Dennis Miller muses, "how did Palin get so far into Obama's head?". Then lookout here comes McCain winning over their own at the 9/11 Forum on National Service at the very pro-Obama Columbia University. McCain was very Reagan-like. Principled, knowing what he believed, refusing at every turn to say that government could do it better.

Unlike the Saddleback Forum, I'm sure Obama got to hear all the questions and answers posed to "Mac" before he took the stage. Obama came off as a little condescending, professor-like, "do I expect to get my bill passed exactly as I wrote it? No. That's not how legislation works."

Obama is now being directed to attack McCain as Bush II. Well look out here comes Palin again, with an interview that went satisfactory. Now attack Palin. It's like a one, two, one, two, punch. And they never seem to see it coming. McCain, Palin, McCain, Palin.

They are smart. We are stupid. That's their meme. To quote George W. Bush, "they misunderestimate me." Well, they misunderestimated him to two loses in Texas and two in Washington. They will continue to do this until they realize they are not as smart as they think they are. Trouble is... they aren't that smart.

Oil Tell You Again

I made this point here, here and here. Now I could make an argument for greater regulation on oil speculation and commodity trading in general. I've shied away from investing in commodities myself. Partially for fear I'll forget I bought 2,000 bushels of wheat and it'll show up at my door. "Here's the wheat you ordered sir. Where do you want it?" Kind of thought that end users should be the only ones buying oil, etc. That could be legislated. One problem, the Law of Unintended Consequences. If the US should outlaw speculative trading of oil would other countries? Of course not. Control would escape US hands, as would trading revenue and jobs.

Cognitive Dissonance and VP Palin

I'll be the first to admit that there is more than a little cognitive dissonance on my behalf (as well as many thoughtful conservatives commenting on articles and calling radio talk shows), regarding a mother of five being second in command to the "leader of the Free World".  Largely because we all know women (my own wife included) who have found greater fulfillment being stay-at-home mothers than they ever did in the workplace.

I had some thoughts. Been known to happen. Sarah Palin is really more like a mother of three at this point. Though raising a down syndrome child could very well be equal to the work of three children. She is a "mother of five" in name only. But that was a bit qualifying, so then I thought... well John McCain sacrificed greatly for his country, why not Sarah Palin? I mean how many overachieving fathers (and mothers) sacrificed their progeny on the alter of career? Still though I wasn't satisfied with that line of reasoning. And then it hit me.

Many, if not most, of our couple friends here in Los Angeles started their marriages with the wife out earning the husband.  I'm a musician and many of our acquaintances are in the arts, a generally slow starting career.  This was indeed the case for my wife and I. She, as a school teacher, out earned me for the first ten years of our now 21 year marriage. We started a family about five years into this marital adventure, and unfortunately my career didn't provide the needed funds for my spouse to stay at home. The solution? Enroll our son 7am to 7pm preschool? Sorry, no. I stayed home. For seven years after the birth of our first child I was a stay-at-home dad. At one point we had three under six. But was it ever fun. I was the ponytailed guy walking around town with a baby strapped to my chest (via a "snuggly") and pushing a double stroller.

I'm a big one for having no regrets in life. My father always regretted giving up his desired career to be a literature professor because of pressure from his Father-in-Law (my grandfather) to get a real job is sales to support his daughter (my mother).  I've stayed the course in my chosen career and love every day of it. My wife and I have raised our kids fully and thoroughly as our own. Never leaving that job to anyone else. There is very little I've missed in the process. A newer car? A grammy? Nah, they would pale to the frequently heard petition, "would you guys raise our kids?"

Fathers make great, um, fathers. When we let them. I'm sure Todd Palin will be an excellent stay-at-home Dad. And an excellent "Second Dude".

Hillary Countdown

It's just a matter of time before Hillary says she can't support Obama and his misogynist ways. She already is reluctant to support his flailing candidacy. He just giving her reasons to bail. Remember "Sweetie"? And now "Pig in Lipstick". Personally, not a big deal, just "tryin'" to relate to the common man. Harvard grads are fatally flawed at being colloquial. But Hillary knows a great, natural politician when she sees one. She married one. Obama is no Bill Clinton.

That's $2300 per hour...

...minus expenses. For the attorneys in the Enron Investor's case. $688,000,000. Now can the investors go after the lawyers? They've been ripped-off twice now. Of course they can't. Lawyers are a very rich lobbying group. And big supporters of the status quo, Obama/Biden.

Note - I have several lawyers in my family. One a retired Federal Appellate Court Judge.

Biden and the End of Greatness

In this speech to party faithful in Toledo Joe Biden talks of his father who "...had to leave to find work..", who used to say, "...it's not whether you get knocked down, it's how quickly you get up...",

However Joe Biden believes it's his and Barack's "job to help America get back up." The Bush Administration "has done so little, so little to help them get back up." How colloquially stated. To me it's obvious in his over simplistic language that he thinks the electorate is stupid. Well if they are, it was with the help of union teachers and government schools. But something larger in his speech struck me. Biden is obviously proud of his dad and thinks he's a great man. I have no reason to question this. His independence, perseverance and strength very likely made him great. But what will happen to greatness with the advent of "Government Bootstraps"? We will no longer be a country of great men and women, but of whiners and "entitlees".

It's been said, "it's not the destination it's the journey". Obama/Biden want to rob America of lessons, trials, character, strength and greatness. What will be left?

Gustav Talking Points

If everything goes well with Gustav be ready for Ray Nagin to get the credit. Not Bush and not Bobby Jindal. Just heard Jindal read a long list preparedness. What a difference from Bianco's fiasco.

VIP VP

McCain's surprising pick of Sarah Palin says that WE, the Republicans, are not going to make this election about experience, (HRC was the one with the 3 AM phone call ad), but about ideas, issues and solutions. I think the Republicans are well positioned to counter the Democrats need to preach unity with there own to preach solutions. The DNC spent the week saying "yeah us!", while the RNC can spend the week saying "yeah U.S.!".

Hip-Hopocracy

After reading this article I got to thinking, if the Democrats had a church they'd preach "Be faithful to your wife" and then show up at church with their girlfriends. But actually I like it when non-Christians call Christians "Hypocrites" because it means they understand that we aren't living up to the perfection of Christ. No one ever has to tell me I'm a hypocrite. I already know it. I don't measure up to my standards let alone God's. And Democrats and Liberals are realizing the same frustration, with carbon footprints and volunteerism and reading "Earth in the Balance" everyday or what ever standards they set for themselves. Sins of commision and omission. For me I glad I love and serve a God who understands and forgives my failings and has, through His son, saved me from my sins against man, God and planet.

Hip Hop Not Nation...

... at least for the time being. Expect to see less of artists like Ludacris, Jay-Z and others associated with Hip-Hop/Rap in the Main Stream Media in the coming weeks. Even though Obama is a fan. At least until after the election. Such warning flags as this one from boston.com are sent up to warn the "true believers" to "chill" for the short term. The vast majority of Americas do not want to become a "Hip-Hop Nation" as many feel murder rates are too high already, teen pregnancy is too common already and gang warfare is too prevalent already. The notion of a top down change in America to these ends does not appeal about 90% of citizens.

So expect to hear very little about how "hip" America is going to be with Obama as president. Note the very not hip-hop Jennifer Hudson will be singing the national anthem (the official United States national anthem that is not this one).

Will They Pull a Lautenberg?

If Obama is running too far behind in September will the Dems pull a Lautenberg?

Lautenberg, verb, to change a player, runner or candidate in the waining moments of the game, race or election in order to win.
Synonyms - cheat, betray, shaft.

Who would they run? Hill?
